The 6-semester Bachelor's degree programme creates a broad foundation in artistic practice and research, in teaching and self-management. In addition to the musical/sound practice that students bring with them and should continue to deepen during their studies, the programme focuses on interdisciplinary, trans-traditional artistic practices, aesthetics and research.
The focus is on students' own artistic work in cross-traditional, cross-genre and cross-disciplinary contexts: as artistic-aesthetic-creative as well as performative sound design - explicitly including analogue, digital, intermodal and installative sound practices. In all complementary subjects (history, music theory, aesthetics, aural training, instrumental studies, etc.), a culturally differentiated historical-critical global perspective is taught, in which different sound and music traditions and cultures are aesthetically equivalent and relevant.
Diverse learning paths in artistic research
In addition to performative and creative approaches, students are encouraged to engage with practices and methods of artistic and academic research. Skills in music education and pedagogy, as well as in managing their own projects, are also taught.
The teaching/learning methods are differentiated according to the area of knowledge and cover the spectrum of possible teaching methods: from lectures, seminars and research workshops to individual and group lessons on instruments or technologies, exercises and rehearsal workshops to internships, field research and independent project work. The expected heterogeneous composition of the student body also allows peer-to-peer learning to be utilised in a targeted manner.
Artistic Career
Graduates specializing in transtraditional music have diverse opportunities in the artistic field. Career paths include working as a professional music performer in various capacities, such as an orchestra or ensemble musician, a soloist or chamber musician, a theater or opera musician, or a session musician and touring artist.
In addition to performance-based careers, opportunities in media and music technology are also available, including roles as a music producer or sound designer.
In Berlin, financial support for artists is accessible through various funding opportunities, including government grants, cultural foundations, and EU funding programs.
Education and Teaching
Graduates can pursue careers in various educational and academic fields. Possible career paths include working as a music educator or instrumental teacher, a lecturer in musicology or ethnomusicology, as well as a university lecturer. Additionally, there are numerous research opportunities at various institutes.
In Berlin, there is a continuous demand for music teachers, as both public and private music schools regularly offer teaching positions throughout the year.
Cultural Management
Graduates can also pursue careers in cultural management, taking on roles such as cultural manager, event organizer, music festival director, or music agent. Additionally, they may work as event managers, overseeing the planning and execution of various artistic events.
The field offers seasonal performance opportunities and highly flexible career paths, including positions as coordinators for music or arts festivals. Alternatively, graduates can work as artist agents, managing and organizing performances for musicians and ensembles.
