Grounded in the sciences, this degree is tailored for students wanting to continue their graduate studies in physical therapy, athletic training, physician assistant, occupational therapy, chiropractic medicine, clinical exercise physiology, wellness promotion, nursing or other related fields.

Faculty in the Division of Health, Human Performance & Exercise-Sports Sciences are knowledgeable and experienced in their respective areas of expertise. More importantly, they look to serve and impact the lives of others. As a Concordia University Chicago health science major, you will learn about the multi-dimensional aspects of a broad interdisciplinary field that encompasses both natural science and behavioral science, preparing you to enter the graduate or professional world.

Each student is paired with a faculty member in the department, acting as an advisor to ensure you meet all course and extracurricular requirements needed to prepare you to apply for graduate school in the area you have chosen.

As a health science major, you will take courses in anatomy and physiology, general biology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, statistics, physics, chemistry, and others such as nutrition, sports nutrition and biomechanics, which are popular electives.

As you enter your junior year, you will be required to begin your 150 hours of a health science practicum experience. This type of experiential learning involves hands-on work experiences or observing a health science professional working throughout their typical workday. These experiences not only allow you the opportunity to get clinical exposure, so that you know what to expect from a career before entering the professional or post-graduation fields, but a majority of health science professional programs require undergraduate students to complete observation hours as part of their prerequisites.

As you enter your senior year, you will be required to complete a research practicum experience. This experience is designed to enrich your undergraduate experience through basic research, publishing, scholarship and creative activities that broaden and deepen your learning. In the research practicum, students work one on one with an experienced exercise and sport science faculty member. Students can choose from a variety of topics about exercise and sport science, from anatomical, physiological, biomechanical and nutritional to spiritual and behavioral. Research is imperative in broadening your knowledge of the health sciences. This experience is designed to enrich your overall perspective on how new information in these fields is discovered.

The University’s close proximity to Chicago gives you nearly limitless opportunities to learn through these practicum experiences. Health science students can participate in consortium-type seminars offered through the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area—a partnership of 15 liberal arts schools and government laboratories.

• Official transcripts of all college coursework from each institution you have attended.
• Foreign transcripts evaluated by a Concordia-Chicago-approved international credentialing service. Concordia-Chicago accepts evaluations from Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
• A certified document pledging financial support for your first year of study and without any unexpected events, and enough funding from the same or an equally dependable source for the following years.
• Proof of graduation from a secondary school.
• A transfer verification form for students transferring from a school in the United States.
• Proof of English proficiency, via one of the following:
• A score of at least 72 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) — Concordia-Chicago’s DI code is 1140
• A score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
• Successful completion of Level 112 at an ELS Language School (ELS) or a certificate of completion of program from an English Language Institute (ELI), along with a recommendation of the program director
• Duolingo test with a minimum score of 95
